I remember the moment as if it were yesterday... I often revived it... Malindi with his eyes as big as if he looked for the responsible. Half the time we had no idea what we were doing. I often said, "Patience is bigger than you, but you're in it all the same." Your life will change even more dramatically than it did when you married. Some of them will be difficult, all glorious. Your wife will have new needs and will have new responsibilities. Be patient with her. Hoosain, you have a tension to keep your fist tight around your true heart. You don't share that easily, and that's usually a good thing. In my old age I am more likely to share my true heart than I was before. However, you must give your true heart to your children, for that is the gift of a good father. Parents never stop... their children never exceed their need for a mother and a father. Roles can change something, but until today, Malindi comes to me in times of good and bad time of defeat and triumph. He was not a lazy father and I was diligent in helping Malindi grow to his potential and grow spiritually with his heart. Paternity is the way to reveal secrets to adults, a school to finish. What you learned as a child cannot compare to what you will learn as a father. One of the great concepts I learned as a father was not to have the child's expectations. Expectation is a dangerous path. Certainly, you will have aspirations for your child, but that is different. The expectation is: "I will do this for you if I can expect you to do that." The aspiration is: "I will do this for you and I wait and pray that you will do it for yourself, as you have seen me do while you grew up. "I don't know if you remember Joe X, but I had the expectation that his son, Adam, was a doctor. Since I was a little boy, we knew Adam was brilliant--genius--of the cards. His father said he'd use that genius in medicine. Adam barely graduated from high school and left his first year of college. He ostracised his own father of his life, moved to a dumpster of an apartment and now leads a fairly shallow life as a working-desk and third-time worker. Joe ruined Adam's opportunity to enter his own genius and potential through his son's aspirations. It was a mess. Of course, it wasn't ALL Joe's fault, but before Adam knew about the options, he was drowned in his father's expectation. The first three years are critical. Around your son with a lot of entrance. I'd take Malindi down the house... in the courtyard... touching things, smelling things, seeing things... a lot of sensory stimulation. Establish rituals that serve to help your child develop his intellect and imagination. Before Malindi could understand words, he would take her to her crib every night and tell her stories. They were always adventure stories that included Malindi as the hero, the good heart hero. Later, and as I grew up, I continued to tell her stories... she chose who would be in history. A great part of a child's world is the fear of unknown things. My stories often include a monster that Malindi must face. We framed the monster as something that was, at first sight horrible and terrifying. But by studying closer, one could see that the monster was really weak and we had a humorous contempt of the creature. The names of the monsters are saying . . . Malindi and creation Ka-Ka (Ca-Ca). Malindi and Monster Fart. Malindi and the Monster of Culo Crusty. The monsters, though very terrifying at first sight, were almost comical in fact. Malindi invariably saved everyone from the monster and generally even redeemed the monster. Until this day, Malindi's friends often describe her as intrepid and one to have around when everything looks bad. And he's not afraid. When he was advising troubled children, he would face abused parents of children and drunks who threatened to kill her. He never retracted in those situations. She's the first person her friends are going to when there are serious problems. And is there any surprise in this? No. Throughout her childhood, Malindi had faced monsters and had saved others from those darkness. Hoosain, I must go back to business, but I appreciate you knowing that you're blessed with a child.
